What to see in Cancún?: A guide to the best-kept tourist corners
Cancún and its surroundings are full of different types of tourist attractions, some of them very famous and popular, but there are also some lesser-known tourist corners that you must visit on your next vacation.
When visiting the Cancún Hotel Zone and its surroundings, you will be able to find some places that are not well known to tourists, but are true gems to visit. For this reason, we tell you about the best-kept secrets of Cancún and how to get to them:
Places to discover in Cancún and its surroundings
1. Isla Contoy
2. Isla Blanca
3. Cenotes
4. Scorpion Temple in Cancún
1. Isla Contoy
This island located north of Isla Mujeres, with a length of just over 8 kilometers, is considered a Natural Reserve and National Wildlife Refuge. To get to the island, it is necessary to hire a boat tour to take you to explore the area, where you will find a small museum about the local fauna and trails to explore the vegetation and beaches.
Also, here you can snorkel at the Ixlaché reef, the second largest barrier reef in the world, after the Australian barrier.

Tip: We recommend booking your visit, as the island has a limited capacity of 200 visitors per day.
How much does it cost to go from Cancún to Isla Contoy? The one-day tour, with a visiting schedule between 9 am and 5 pm, has an average cost of $110 USD per person (consider $15 USD extra to pay for access to the island). Best of all, most service providers pick you up directly at the beach of your hotel in Cancún.
2. Isla Blanca
Just an hour away from the north of downtown Cancún, you can reach this destination by road, via the road to Punta Sam. Here you will find 20 kilometers of virgin beach located between the Chacmuchuc lagoon and the Caribbean Sea. It is an ideal place to practice ecotourism, sport fishing, or water activities, such as kitesurfing.
How to get to Isla Blanca by public transport? If you decide not to rent a car, you can get there by taxi with a one-way cost of approximately $800 MXN from the Hotel Zone. It is very important that you agree with the taxi driver on the return time as well as the fare.
3. Cenotes
Between Cancún and Playa del Carmen you will find a wide variety of cenotes, which are part of the great natural attractions of Quintana Roo; some are very popular, others not so much, like the following, but equally spectacular:
- Cenote la Noria: This incredible enclosed cenote, 18 meters deep and 47 meters in diameter, is distinguished by being home to several bats, but don't worry, they are used to living with humans so they do not pose any risk. In addition to swimming inside the cenote, you can rent ATVs to explore the jungle area or go on a zip line. To get there, you have to find kilometer 19 of the famous “Route of the Cenotes”, on the Puerto Morelos – Leona Vicario road, with an access cost of $100 MXN.
- Cenote Popol Vuh: This is one of the furthest cenotes from the road, so it is immersed in the fauna of Puerto Morelos, near kilometer 32 of the Puerto Morelos - Leona Vicario highway, about an hour from the Cancún Hotel Zone. Access costs $70 MXN.
- Cenote Mojarras: The 60-meter diameter cenote is ideal for snorkeling and diving. It is located in the middle of the jungle at kilometer 12.5 of the Puerto Morelos ejido, a little less than an hour away from the Cancún Hotel Zone, with an access cost of $150 MXN.
4. Scorpion Temple in Cancún
The Cancún Hotel Zone has 3 small archaeological zones; in one of them is the Scorpion Temple, also known as Yamil lu’um. These are the ruins of a Mayan building hidden between the Caribbean beach and a hotel in the area.
You can visit this archaeological site and enjoy the sun and all the amenities of Playa Marlin, which is located at kilometer 12.5 of the Cancún Hotel Zone.
