What is the sand on Cancun beaches made of?
Trips20/10/2021White, soft, and cool is the sand that makes up the beautiful beaches of Cancun; however, did you know that 70% of this sand is composed of tiny pieces of coral excreted by the Parrotfish? It's no joke! This animal spends most of its time biting corals to keep its beak in optimal condition.
Its existence is vital for the survival of the coral, as it is a "natural cleaner" of parasites and other beings that grow on it, and without its existence, the coral would die.
For this reason, a single parrotfish can produce up to 100 kg of white sand per year!! Those of us who are passionate about paradise beaches want this fish to be abundant.
Knowing that it is one of the most abundant fish in the reefs and after thousands of years of existence, imagine all the white sand these colorful animals have created.
But don't worry, not everything is composed of coral; it is also made of small shell fragments that get crushed by the aggressive action of the waves, especially during storms. That is why our beaches are not as white as talcum powder. So, you can rest easy while you enjoy a great walk on the beach.
