It's fine without a straw

Drinking straws, sippers, tubes, or whatever you call them. Are they really that necessary?

Little by little, we observe that our planet is increasingly asking for our contribution to stop pollution.

Last September, the new Law for the Prevention and Comprehensive Management of Solid Waste was presented in the state of Quintana Roo, seeking to improve the quality of our environment by prohibiting the use of plastic straws, styrofoam, and polyethylene bags.

If approved and implemented, plastic waste would decrease and, in the long run, the improvement would be more than visible.

While this initiative goes through approvals and analysis, we do not want to stand by without doing something about it. That is why at our Royal Solaris Cancún, GR Solaris Cancún, and GR Caribe by Solaris hotels, the use of plastic straws is being limited, and through testing, we are looking for the best ecological option to offer for drinks that require one, such as those made with crushed ice.

Meanwhile, in Baja California Sur, reforms were approved for the State Law for Ecological Balance and Environmental Protection, which will function in a similar way: the elimination of the use of plastic bags, expanded polystyrene (styrofoam) containers, and straws. This paves the way for a major change since, according to statistics, around 138,032 straws and styrofoam containers are thrown away on the La Paz boardwalk every month.*

Royal Solaris Los Cabos is also joining this effort, where, just as in the Solaris hotels in Cancun, the use of straws on the premises has been reduced.

In conclusion, we have stopped offering drinks with this utensil in all our hotels, so if you are staying with us, your drinks will not come with one... What can you do if you need or want to use a straw? We have the following tips for you:

• Bring your own straw: paper, steel, avocado seed, biodegradable, or edible plastic—there are many options for everyone!
• Bring your own cup, tumbler, or beverage container: At Solaris, we have no problem refilling your container with the drink of your choice at our bars.
• Win a contest with the Entertainment team and receive a Solaris tumbler: What better way to have the most fun and end up with the best prize to help the environment!
• Purchase a Solaris Mug or Cup: In our Solaris Shop, we sell cups and mugs with lids and straws, and of course, with the best designs so you can have a souvenir of paradise. For sale at all our hotels!

But remember, reducing the use of straws is just the first step; let's make our best effort for our planet! We must take into account other types of plastics in our daily lives and think of alternatives. Also, if you smoke, remember not to throw cigarette butts on the street, as they are one of the biggest pollutants to the planet.

In the end, our planet will thank us!
