How do we celebrate Mexican Independence Day?
Solaris Hotels11/09/2018By Mariel Díaz
Our great national holiday is approaching, so we have included some important aspects needed to celebrate Independence Day like an authentic Mexican. Or, if you are visiting Mexico in the month of September, get ready to experience our favorite month!
Flags
What better decoration for this day than our national symbol! So, not only on this day but throughout the whole month, you will see the flag of Mexico. Don't have your own? Don't worry, this month is special for buying one, as many street stalls emerge exclusively to sell flags and tricolor decorations for the parties.
Quench your thirst with Tequila and Beer!
The distinguished Tequila and the popular beer cannot be missing from the party; while Tequila may be for the brave with nerves of steel, who enjoy it in small sips or shot by shot; there is a beer for every taste... Or many!
And although it is very hard to believe, there are people who prefer not to drink alcohol, so what better way than to enjoy delicious "aguas frescas," authentically Mexican!
Music
We Mexicans like all kinds of music, from salsa, rock, reggae, pop, reggaeton; and more... But the favorites here are Mexican, music like mariachi, rancheras, and cumbias to start the dancing!
Food
Yes, we had mentioned the drinks, but food can never be missing. From snacks to delicious dishes, Mexican gastronomy is characterized by the variety of flavors in every bite, and to celebrate independence, phew! We could never finish naming them all.
Tacos, guacamole, pico de gallo, pozole, chiles en nogada, grilled meats, tamales... And the SAUCES, let's not forget the best companion to our meals: the green one, the red one, extra spicy, sweet, of every flavor and texture!
Good company
And of course, it is the perfect date to gather with all family and friends. In homes, local venues, restaurants, or on the street, that day any place is perfect to celebrate, as long as you have the best people by your side!
The "Grito" (The Shout)
To begin with, what is the "grito"? It is not about running out to the streets and shouting or forming some kind of rhyme and saying it at the top of your lungs with your companions. It is something more traditional. The President of Mexico commemorates what was the beginning of independence: the "Grito de Dolores";
"The heads of the Executive Branch at the different levels of government —municipal presidents (...), governors, and the President of the Republic—, as well as ambassadors in representations abroad, carrying a national flag, direct a speech to the gathered population, which usually includes the following phrases:
Mexicans!
Long live the heroes who gave us our homeland and freedom!
Long live Hidalgo!
Long live Morelos!
Long live Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez!
Long live Allende!
Long live Aldama and Matamoros!
Long live our national independence!
Long live Mexico! Long live Mexico! Long live Mexico!"
It is in unison with the above that we Mexicans repeat with great pride.
Fireworks
At the end of the "grito," we have the sky painted with colors with the tradition of "fireworks" or pyrotechnics, which illuminates the faces of all the Mexicans gathered for the great celebration.
But above all... A great attitude!
Long live Mexico!
