Happy 48th anniversary, Cancun!
Trips20/04/2018Located on the northeast coast of Quintana Roo, its beauty surrounding its beaches, the extent and biodiversity of its reefs, islands, lagoons, and cenotes, as well as the great variety of flora and fauna it possesses, has made Cancun the most globally recognized Mexican tourist destination. What were the origins of this place?
Back then, the northeast strip of what we know as the Yucatan Peninsula was full of virgin beaches. The Mexican government, with the support of Fonatur, Mexico's tourism promotion trust, had planned the creation of a tourist city within that strip of sand that showed the Sea on one side and the Nichupté Lagoon on the other.
The development of what we know today as Cancun began in 1969 with 6,000 inhabitants, and it was in 1974 that it began operations with an international airport and a hotel. Cancun at that time was the first of the five tourist hubs on the Mexican coasts, serving as the foundation for a new policy fostered in tourism.
Who would have thought that today it is one of the most recommended tourist destinations in Mexico and the world?
What does the word "Cancun" mean?
The name Cancun comes from the Mayan "kaan" and "kun" which means "nest of snakes," due to the large number of specimens that inhabit the region, thanks to the jungle area in which this city has been developed.
