On your next trip to Los Cabos, don't miss the opportunity to visit the Sea of Cortez, known as “The Aquarium of the World,” one of the top diving destinations protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Where is the Sea of Cortez located?

The Sea of Cortez, also known as the “Aquarium of the World,” is one of the favorite tourist destinations within the extensive Gulf of California in Mexico, which touches the coasts of 4 states of the republic: Baja California Norte and Baja California Sur, as well as the coasts of Sonora and Sinaloa. But why is it called the Aquarium of the World?

Who named the Sea of Cortez the Aquarium of the World?

This area was christened by the famous oceanographer Jacques Cousteau as the “Aquarium of the World” due to the great biodiversity housed by both the sea and the more than 200 islands in the area, creating a perfect habitat for more than 800 marine species.

Diverse colonies of sea lions, humpback whales and blue whales, dolphins, corals, and hundreds of reef fish live in this region, including multiple species endemic to the region, as well as large colonies of birds.

What can you do in the Sea of Cortez?

You can carry out different very fun activities, both on the coast and inside the spectacular waters of the sea. Here we tell you about some of the many options available:

Outside the Sea of Cortez

On land, you can enjoy the sun on one of the extensive golden sand beaches with mountainous landscapes. You can also go hiking in the natural areas of the region, as well as enjoy adventure activities in all-terrain vehicles on the dunes that surround the Sea of Cortez. During low tide, you can visit the famous Lover's Beach (Playa del Amor), where you will have a spectacular view of the Sea of Cortez.

Tip: Although swimming is not allowed on several beaches due to strong waves, you will find some bays that are ideal for swimming, such as Balandra or Medano Beach in Los Cabos.

On the Sea of Cortez

You can enjoy different water activities, such as taking a boat trip to tour the sea and see the dolphins or whales that visit the area up close. Also, in the different beaches and ports of the region, you can rent equipment and take tours to go sailing, surfing, kayaking, or sport fishing.

Tip: Although different species of whales live in the area, the best months for sighting them are between December and April, mainly in the La Paz and Los Cabos area.

Inside the Sea of Cortez

The main water attractions to visit in this area are snorkeling and diving, because the Sea of Cortez is home to thousands of species of marine wildlife, with reefs and endemic species that you can visit up close by swimming alongside them.

  • In Cabo Pulmo, you will find the oldest reef in the American Pacific, teeming with corals, fish, mollusks, and diverse marine species.
  • You can take a boat to reach Espíritu Santo Island, which is ideal for snorkeling and witnessing the exotic marine life of the Sea of Cortez, surrounded by tropical fish, starfish, and, in some cases, sea lions.
