Cenotes
Trips23/03/2017Did you know that there are more than 10,000 cenotes in the Yucatan Peninsula, although only about half have been surveyed and registered?
The word "cenote" is a term used only in Mexico and comes from the Mayan "Dzonot," which means abyss.
There are 4 types of cenotes:
- Open: These are the oldest existing cenotes, which are surrounded by abundant vegetation; they are often confused with lagoons and can be found in wetlands or within mangroves, enriching the coastal habitat.
- Semi-open: These have an opening at the top, the diameter of which increases as it nears the water's surface and all the way down to the bottom. These cenotes have natural light due to the proximity between the upper cavern and the water's surface.
- Closed: These are the youngest cenotes; their shapes are circular, and they are enclosed by a vault, which may or may not have some openings on its surface, allowing sunlight to penetrate some of them. Inside these cenotes, large quantities of stalagmites and stalactites can be observed.
- Deep open: These are the best known and most popular because they are completely open, cylindrical in shape, have completely vertical walls, and are quite tall, reaching up to 25 meters.
These are some of the most incredible Cenotes…
