1.- The beaches are public.
From the high tide line, all beaches in Mexico are public zones. This means you can walk along the white sands of Cancun for miles. Not all beaches have public access, but you have the right to walk and swim on any beach in Cancun. Some hotels and resorts have restricted areas near the hotel with private sunbeds and umbrellas. If you don't want to be bothered by vendors, check if the hotel where you are staying has this option.
2.- Cancun's beaches are patrolled.
If you are in the hotel zone, you can see members of the Mexican Navy patrolling the area; the local police also monitor the beaches in vehicles.
3.- The temperature is mild throughout the year.
While it can sometimes be a bit cold, the weather in Cancun is usually around 26°C all year round; in winter it is somewhat cold –approximately 21°C– and in the summer months they are hot –around 28-30°C. This means that even if you are visiting in December or January, you will have the opportunity to swim in its paradisiacal waters.
4.- Most beaches in the Hotel Zone have lifeguards.
If you are in the hotel zone, you can expect to see lifeguards along the most popular beaches from 9 am to 6 pm. You can spot them by their Red Cross shirts and red shorts. Some hotels also have their own. This does not mean that you should not look out for your friends and family while swimming. Drowning is a real danger in any ocean environment.
5.- Flags indicate beach safety.
You will be able to see colored flags along the beach. These flags indicate swimming conditions and safety. You should pay attention to these in order to stay safe.
- Black Flag: Dangerous. Do not swim.
- Red Flag: Extreme caution, dangerous.
- Yellow Flag: Caution.
- Green Flag: Safe to swim.
